Reserve / hold

A temporary commitment taking a work off active offer while a specific buyer decides.

A reserve (or hold) gives one collector first position on a work for a limited time. It's a courtesy with teeth: the gallery declines other buyers meanwhile, so unmanaged reserves cost real sales.

Good practice treats reserves as availability states with owners and dates — who holds it, since when — visible wherever the work appears, so a stale hold gets chased instead of forgotten.
