Catalogue raisonné

The scholarly, comprehensive catalog of every known work by an artist.

A catalogue raisonné aims to record an artist's complete output: every work, with images, dimensions, provenance, exhibition history, and literature. It's the reference against which attribution and authenticity questions are argued.

For galleries and studios, the practical lesson is that the raisonné is assembled from records kept (or not kept) decades earlier. Clean inventory with provenance and edition data is tomorrow's raisonné groundwork.
