Registrar
The role (and record-keeping discipline) responsible for tracking artworks' locations, movements, and documentation.
In museums and larger galleries, the registrar owns the physical truth: where every work is, how it traveled, its insurance and customs paperwork, its condition history. In small galleries the role exists even when nobody holds the title — someone has to know which crate the Vallotton is in.
Registrar-grade tracking means every movement is a record — gallery to storage, storage to fair booth, booth to buyer — so location is queryable history, not tribal knowledge.
